Speeches:
President Joseph Anselmo's kick off speech:
Good morning my fellow Americans. I, Joseph R Anselmo have decided to run for President of the United States of America. I feel I am best qualified to be President because I am an Eagle Scout candidate and a lifeguard for the County of Nassau. A quote i like from a past president who is also one i look up to, John F. Kennedy which states, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them”. As a man in my current position this means we must stand by what we say rather than claim that we will do what we preach in our lectures about benefiting our country. Such things I plan to do are focus on our economic problems, deal with the threats from ISIS, and better our education system.
Looking over towards foreign affairs, there is an extremist group known as ISIS. This group has been able to take territory from both Iraq and Syria. When they took over the territory, they had taken over many places that produce large amounts of income each day. So, not only are they an extremist group spreading their beliefs, but they are making millions off the oil revenue that comes in each day. With this money, they are able to buy weapons and use the weapons that we had left behind for the weak government of Iraq for them to fight these extremist groups. So not only are they rich, but they now are supplied with US military grade equipment and weapons. What President Obama has been doing is airstrikes in small towns and villages where ISIS is located. This is a strategy to try and weaken ISIS before we have to send in ground troops. I think this is a good strategy for the time being. Soon enough ISIS will be in higher civilian populated cities and villages that we can no longer do airstrikes due to the amount of civilian casualties and innocent lives that would be taken. What I plan to do as your president is continue with airstrikes and keep civilian casualties to a minimum, but my goal is to have none. Over time I plan to have ground units sent over and push ISIS back into a corner. This will not just involve the US though. I plan to work with other nations in the world who feel ISIS has gone too far and needs to be eliminated. This is a common concern with people who are unsure if we should go in or not. Whether the US is alone and has to increase our debt or if we can work with other nations so we don’t have the majority of troops involved. Turning away from ISIS and to the process of pulling out our troops in Afghanistan. What Obama has promised was to have them all pulled out by the year of 2014 but now we are in the year of 2015. What I think is that yes he is doing a good job and pulling out all of these troops, but if we take everyone out too fast, the central government of Afghanistan will weaken and it will leave them highly vulnerable to other extremist groups including ISIS. So I propose a new plan, I say we go on and leave some troops there to help strengthen the government and allow them to have the ability to fight back against these extremist groups if needed. So, we leave about a quarter of what’s left of troops over in Afghanistan to help build it up both for them to help us in the future and for them to become a strong central government again. Though this may mean we will have an increased amount money going towards war efforts, it will also help us to succeed. Otherwise we are pulling all these troops out just for Afghanistan to fall back into the wrong hands and we have to re enter to fight again.
My next focus is our economy. Right now, the US is about $17 trillion in debt. We have been digging ourselves into a deeper hole each year with the amount of importing and becoming so reliant on other countries to supply us rather than us becoming more self reliant. That is one of the things we must do here to make the economy turn around. We need to cut back on how much we import with everything, even oil because we have oil here as well. If we use the oil we have here, we won’t be spending so much to import it over to all the states. Also, we should have things made here rather than it being made in China and then sent here. By becoming more self reliant, we can open more job opportunities and decrease the unemployment rate. What also needs to be done is budget cuts. We have all this money being put towards these organizations and businesses which doesn’t help because they are relying on the government and taxpayers money to pay for their research when they should come up with their own ways for money. We need to promote the use of more start-up fundraisers for researchers. Doing this would definitely cut a good amount of money and start to decrease the amount of debt that we are in.
My last focus is our education system. We are ranked 17th in the world for our education system. One thing we did that was a mistake was focus so much on testing to assess students. Rather than improving what we have done, we made things even harder by testing more and more. If we look over at Finland which is ranked number 1 in education, they had stopped standardized testing so much which is proven to help out the education system. Along with this, they have free schooling from pre k up. They offer so much to the students and families here. If we could do anything to fix the education system, i would say use Finland as a role model and change our system over. We have a large dropout rate in the US. Every 26 seconds a student drops out of school. If we were to do anything, it should be to make classes smaller so each student gets the attention needed, gets the proper learning environment, and gets to experience different learning techniques. Each person learns best in different ways, whether its a lecture class, hands on, or mix of both. Thats why students should take classes in either elementary school or middle school to experience all of these techniques. And the high schools should offer these different kinds of teaching techniques for each class subject. Another thing that adds onto the dropout rate is the pressure and money needed for education after high school. Many of these colleges are expensive and put students in debt for the rest of their lives. If college was cheaper or even free, maybe that could help motivate these kids in getting the education for a college degree for a better job.
So all in all, i plan to make this country a better place for the near future. To help the people of America out economically, with our education system, and with our foreign affairs. So help me help you by electing me for your President of the United States.

Vice President Sabrina Niedfeld's kick off speech:
Hello America my name is Sabrina Niedfeld, and I'm running alongside Joseph Anselmo as his vice president. I have been an aspiring artist since I was little, being able to take the simplest materials and creating a masterpiece for all to be able to see. I want to make America my masterpiece. There is one person that most inspires me to do this and that is former president Theodore Roosevelt. He inspires me the most because he had many ideas and plans of progressive reforms and a strong foreign policy. According to Roosevelt, “If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble; you wouldn't sit for a month.” This means that most of the problems we face as a country today are a result of how other we Americans, including former Presidents have dealt with our problems, such as the debt, problems with the education system, and foreign affairs.
Similar to how Roosevelt dealt directly with currency reform, we have decided to tackle our nation’s problem with debt head on. In a letter to the Senate and House of Representative Roosevelt wrote “The financial standing of the Nation at the present time is excellent, and the financial management of the Nation's interests by the Government during the last seven years has shown the most satisfactory results. But our currency system is imperfect, and it is earnestly to be hoped that the Currency Commission will be able to propose a thoroughly good system which will do away with the existing defects.” We propose to cut existing programs in order to decrease government spending. If we too are able to fix the lasting imperfections of the system we may be able to get out of the overwhelming debt we're in.
Theodore Roosevelt once said “ A man who has a never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad.” This means that with a good education a person will be able to be more successful than a person without an education. To make sure we can pursue this we have planned to reform the education so everyone can have a chance. We would like to the United States to be where we once were by including some parts of Finland's education plan. As well we would like to lessen the cost or get rid of the high cost of college. Despite being sick as a child Roosevelt was able to get a proper education with the use of a tutor to then be a graduate at Harvard University.
Theodore Roosevelt’s plan for foreign policy was to increase influence on other nations so they would be able to share same prestige as the United States. He did this with persuasion. “ Speak softly and carry a big stick.” This means that we should try to use diplomacy and if that does not work send in troops. This could be one reason why some extremist groups such as ISIS came to be in the middle east but, in this case we and other nations of the UN should find a way to help and disband further exposure.
In doing this we are able to do our great nation justice. I am Sabrina Niedfeld and I would like to be your vice president.
